Bloomington Elementary

GVCs

GVC stands for Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum. These are the standards from the Utah State Core Curriculum that our teachers have decided is most important for students to learn before moving on to the next grade level. All students are guaranteed to have the opportunity to learn this curriculum, no matter who they have as their teacher.


Kindergarten GVCs

LANGUAGE ARTS
  • I will read grade level text.
  • I can write a complete sentence.
MATH
  • I can demonstrate number sense to 30.
  • I can fluently add and subtract within five.

1st Grade GVCs

LANGUAGE ARTS
  • I can ask and answer questions about key details in literature, poetry, and informational text.
  • I can use phonics skills and word recognition while accurately and fluently reading 47 WPM using a grade level text.
  • I can demonstrate understanding of standard English grammar conventions in spoken and written word, including multi-meaning words and word relationships.
  • I can write simple and complete sentences using legible writing, letter sounds, sight words, correct capitalization, and punctuation to express opinions, facts, and narration.
MATH
  • I can use place value to identify and write numbers to 120.
  • I can add and subtract numbers up to 20.
  • I can identify and manipulate shapes by their different attributes.
  • I can use addition and subtraction strategies to solve word problems and evaluate equations.
  • I can show an understanding using measurements and data.

2nd Grade GVCs

LANGUAGE ARTS
  • I can demonstrate conventions of the English language and grammar when speaking, listening in collaborative discussions, and writing a narrative, opinion, and explanatory piece.
  • I know and can apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills to read 2nd Grade text including fictional, informational, and other types of literature with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
  • I can ask and answer questions that demonstrate an understanding of key details in informational and literary texts.
MATH
  • Students will be able to add and subtract single-digit numbers quickly and fluently.
  • Students will be able to use place value strategies to add and subtract within 100.
  • Students will be able to recognize shapes and their attributes as  wholes and parts of a whole; recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes.
  • Students will be able to apply addition and subtraction strategies to determine length.

3rd Grade GVCs

LANGUAGE ARTS
  • Using grade-level phonics skills, I can read fluently, 100 words correct per minute on a 3rd Grade level text.
  • I can write a 3rd Grade level paragraph using appropriate grammar and conventions.
  • I can ask and answer questions about what I read and listen to using details from the story.
MATH
  • I can learn and choose strategies to show that I know how to add and subtract within 1,000, including multi-step word problems.
  • I can learn and choose strategies to show that I know how to multiply and divide within 100, including multi-step word problems.
  • I can classify quadrilaterals according to their attributes.
  • I can explain, compare, and represent fractions as equal shares and identify their values.

4th Grade GVCs

LANGUAGE ARTS
  • I can understand and correctly apply inference sequencing, compare and contrasting, simile, metaphor, etc.
  • I can read fluently at grade-level with appropriate expression, rate, and comprehension.
  • I can show written competency in expository, narrative, and opinion pieces using appropriate evidence and paragraph structure.
  • I can read and deeply comprehend a variety of texts (informational, literature) and respond thoughtfully.
MATH
  • I can multiply 4 x 1 digit, 2 x 2 digit, and long division problems with four numbers in the dividend.
  • I can add, subtract, multiply, and compare fractions.
  • I can classify and recognize angles using protractors and solve area/perimeter problems using addition and multiplication.
  • I can differentiate between customary and metric systems; including gallons, quarts, pints, cups, yards, feet, inches, etc., and meters, centimeters, millimeters, kilograms, grams, etc.
SCIENCE
  • Students will recognize and identify the components of the water cycle and weather; including evaporation, transpiration, condensation, precipitation, and runoff.
  • Students will be able to identify and explain the three types of rocks and how they are included in the rock cycle. They will also be able to understand the formation of soils and the needs of plants from the soil. They will also understand how fossils are formed.
  • Students will be able to describe the common plants and animals found in Utah and discuss how they interact with their surroundings and how they have adapted in their environments.

5th Grade GVCs

LANGUAGE ARTS
  • Students will write narratives developing read or imagined experiences or events. They will use effective techniques, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.
  • Students will read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
  • Students will summarize a written text read aloud or information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively and orally.
  • Students will write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information.
  • Students will write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.
MATH
  • I can fluently multiply whole numbers.
  • I can divide by a one-digit and two-digit divisor.
  • I can add and subtract decimals.
  • I can multiply and divide decimals correctly.
  • I can add and subtract fractions correctly.
  • I can convert like measurement units using customary and metric systems.
  • I can classify two-dimensional and three-dimensional figures into categories based on their properties.
SCIENCE
  • Students will understand that chemical and physical changes occur in matter.
  • Students will understand the factors that reshape Earth’s surface (i.e., volcanoes, earthquakes, weathering, and erosion).
  • Students will understand that magnetism can be observed between the magnetic fields of magnets or between a magnet and materials made of iron.
  • Students will understand features of static and current electricity.
  • Students will understand that traits are passed from the parent to their offspring, and that sometimes the offspring may possess variations of those traits.
